I did have a go, and it was surprisingly easy to get the hang of the bamboo treadle.

It was in a touristy area and was more for show than anything, but he was surprised that I knew what to do with the thing, and I even shamed him in to sharpening his tools.

This is me "having a go"
Note the tools on the lathe bed A skew and a knife, which I think he used to put the rings on the finished product

A bit more action here, with me gripping the bamboo pole with my toes!

You can also just make out the bamboo spring tucked in the rafters

The lathe was actually built into the structure of the house, so was really solid
