Hello..

I was chopping logs when I found this log with some nice patterns under the bark on a piece of Oak. Anyone know what caused it, or wether it just naturally occurs..?
I have seen it before, but never this much..

is this bark over a burl? My guess is that this is how burls are formed as cambium is laid down in a random pattern.

Weird. Never seen anything like it. When I carved a large oak bowl earlier this year I was surprised at the variety of different "structures" in oak. Veins that ran sap green, veins that looked red-brown (but I think produced the blue-black tannin stains), "nodes"/areas of different color & texture. It felt a bit a bit like dissecting an animal. Interesting wood, oak.

Not just under the bark, I have been splitting some holme oak recently and within the wood are the same amazing patterns. This was a knotty bit of wood and I think it is caused by economic growth, small buds that do not develop and also produce burrs.

This looks like the sort of thing folk find pictures of Christ, Madonna, Geo Washington, or A N Other folk hero in.
Have a look before cutting further - if you see some religious image here it could be worth a fortune!

I can't spell or type well but I think perhaps it might be epicormic growth. Economic growth is what all the politicians are on about.

It is a wonderful piece of wood. If you put it in boiling water would you get oak noodles?

I have already seen The Scream.. It was on a bit of granite though..
