Bowl hooks for beginners

Postby Jochen » Wed Mar 12, 2014 3:41 pm

Hello,
my name is Jochen. I'm a German carpenter and new to the world of bowl turning. I've recently finished my bowl lathe and have turned a few bowls. The hooks I use are made by a local blacksmith. I made him some sketches and he made the hooks. Neither he nor me have had experiences in forging bowl hooks. The result was quite good, but for the next ones I order, i would like to give him a more detailed input. Does anybody have detailed sketches (Where to put the bevel, radius of the hook, shape etc.) he or she would share. I know there are different hooks for different tasks. Which are the "must have" ones that cover most of the tasks?

I'm looking forward to hearing from anybody out there!

Jochen

Search this site for BOWL HOOKS or HOOKS.
Buy Robin Wood's The Wooden Bowl - this has various hook images.
They will all work - bevel in, bevel out, single cutting-edge, double cutting edge.
Make sure you start with at least 16 mm diameter steel if possible. Some hooks you'll want big and fat, some need to be small to get inside tight corners. Just make lots and experience will teach you.
