What time of year to cut spoon wood?

I did some searching but couldn't find an answer.

Can green wood be cut year round to make spoons or are there certain times (seasons) that are better or worse?

Hi Jimmy, Welcome to the forum. It is generally better to cut green wood for carving in the winter when the sap is down. It's less stressful for the tree and also less likely to introduce infection. That being said, I doubt any of us would turn down fresh green wood for carving if it came our way. (From tree surgeons etc)

If you do get green wood, store it in the shade and cover with a tarp. (Small quantities can be kept in a freezer). You can slow the drying process with a 50/50 pva water mix painted on both ends. Cut your pieces 2 or 3 inches longer than you need as it frequently checks (cracks from the ends) as it dries.

When carving spoons or bowls, keep the shavings/chips and store the item in them in a plastic bag between sessions. When whatever you're carving is finished allow to dry in a cool airy place before oiling.
