idea for fun at the AGM

Postby robin wood » Wed Dec 03, 2008 10:07 pm

Not sure if this is the right place to put this but here is an idea for fun at the AGM

Now I am not a chairmaker but I still seem to have a good number of dodgy chairlegs about the place, you know the sort where you turn out 3 but don't have enough wood for a forth and never get round to it. Maybe there are a number that were just not quite right so just get shoved to the back of the shed but never thrown out or burnt.

Well how about we put out a call for everyone to bring their dodgy old naff chairlegs to the AGM. We bring a tenon cutter and drill so we can put even tenons on them all, we also need a pile of blocks of wood to drill holes in (maybe naff bowl blanks then we just start jointing legs together to make a big sculpture. I imagine maybe making something like a giant football all made with interlocking legs but the design would depend on what turned up on the day and how many folk got involved. What do you think? Is there a committee member here that could mention the idea at the next meeting?

I knew I should have put them straight in the fire when I found them under the sofa ...

How about building a giant man from the chair legs.

We could put Edward Woodward inside and set fire to it.

Yeah! I like this Wickerman idea - but let's call it the "Bodgerman". It could be that we could turn up leg-cylinders to suit the project at the AGM if folk did not have enough duff ones already at home. There's certainly enough lathes there, and some folk are looking for something to make - well, they could just contribute a freshly-made component to the "Bodgerman" sculpture.

Who will take on the organising of this? ( count me out - I'll be running the 'have-a-go' bowl lathes.)

I think there is a good idea here. I know a bloke who was into building sculptures that were set fire to in some form of celebration, though his developed into elaborate affairs which involved some pyrotechnics, (black powder.

However the basic idea of using old bits of turnery and possibly some "found sculpture" wood and making a thing (bodger) would be a good focus of the outside fire side apres dinner scene.

I will mention it to the organisers of ball 2009, as all they would need to provide is a fire site, if you do the rest?

Good idea. I'll be happy to contribute a few odds and sods to the creation. There might be quite a few people who don't want to enter the competitions or races but who would feel happier to contribute 'something gone wrong' to a creation.

cheers

Sounds like it may be a goer, I shall be busy organising demos in the whittling area so we could do with finding someone else who is game for taking this one on.

Tony if the committee like the idea could it be advertised in the gazette in time for folk to bring some legs, and could we ask for someone to help run the area? I think it would work best if there was some overall plan whether it be "giant football" or "wicker man" and someone needs to be there looking after tools, tenon cutter, drill and vice?

I'll bring some of what seems to be my speciality - ornamental firewood.

Seem to make a lot of it but don't usually hide it under the sofa.

May be we could have a competition based on this video but with axes instead, cutting branches off trees?

I think it is a good idea to wear a hard hat when practising for this

Good one
He cheated, the throttles were not taped up so the chains were not running. Also how many of us have 3 chainsaws?
