délarder les pannes : roughly cut to size and shape the pieces that support rafters, pannes chevrières (intermediate ones), pannes faîtières (top ones), pannes sablières (bottom ones resting on top of walls)

Notice that in France traditional hand hewing work of carpenters/woodcutters is achieved with what are in fact coopers side axes.

Those coopers who could do the job properly with their side axes were extremely skilled people.

Interesting. Is "délarder" derived from "lard"/fat (e.g. is "roughly cut" referred to as "cut fat")?
