Here's mine. Made mostly of red deal, with a yew 'head' and an ash foot rest. Coz I use it at shows, it comes apart; there are two iron bolts that slip in to hold the arm and allow the support on which the timber to be cut rests (does it have a name? I should check Mike's book!). A small piece of ash fits into one of three slots carved into the main bench to allow for adjustment. A small piece of leather under the head seems to give good grip and possibly protects finer timber (I used to pack sheep's wool under the leather pad, just on one side).

I really should cut that lawn!

I have been inspired, and have adapted Woodness Sakes shaving horse to work with a dumbhead, which as you all know is the only way to go! I have also made the seat stronger and adjustable up and down as I like working at different heights depending on what I am making.

I have also made a workshop horse that is adjustable in every dimension, which is very useful in finding out which heights you would like to work at.

Maybe, was thinking of putting it in a small marque and charging an entry fee, you know 50p for a look and £1.50 for a five minute sit, £2.50 to make something on it
Of course it is coming up, it is my favourite horse now, and made for making my fan birds on it, with all the tools to hand on the tool rack

I like the tool shelf on the branch horse. I usuallyend up with a lap full of tools which makes standing up a little difficult.

Ok, Sean, that is the ultimate Rolls-Royce, er, Rolls-Horse. I love the tool rack, too.

BTW the supremely adjustable, N-degrees of freedom shaving horse is a great idea. I will put that in my queue of things to do, because summer is coming and so are the kids, and a super-adjustable horse would be great for them, too.

Surely if they are "horses" measurements should be in "hands".... Also I bet "Elf & Safety" would love to have a pop at such things. Afterall I note that most office/computer chairs are only safe to 12 stone. Still trying to photo American Craft images.

I just finished my first shaving horse. It's not the prettiest thing... But i works just fine



I split the wood from a 5m trunk of ash, that i bought from the local forester.
Most of the work was done using an axe. Wich was a very interesting process for me.

I haven't done much greenwood work before... but now i am definately going to try some more
