Why the strictures on price lists?

Postby HughSpencer » Tue Nov 18, 2008 9:33 pm

I introduced this forum section to keep 'advertising' out of the 'discussion' forums as advertising offends those who give their time and knowledge on the forum simply to forward the aims of the APT.
However, so that folks understand the strictures that this site is run under I will give you the relevant sections from the rules I have to obey.
General terms;

* The web server shall not be run for financial gain, no reselling of connectivity to third parties or e-commerce portals.
* No material on the web server shall be detrimental to company or promote services competing with company.
* Any organisation represented by the website shall not be promoting goods and services that may compete with, or undermine the market of, any Company Member.
* No reference within the web pages to Company shall exist without prior agreement with the management.
* No illegal, pornographic or obscene content or links to sites containing these sorts of materials.
* Respect for the copyright and human rights of others must be maintained at all times.

The use of Google Adverts to earn enough money to replace the server when it gets old, just about squeezes under the wire because the adverts are actually pulled from the Google servers by the surfer's web browser, the advert traffic does not come from the web host and therefore isn't using the bandwidth from the server.
However, if you use the forum to directly sell rather than just to provide information that is a signpost to elsewhere e.g. a URL, you are abusing the transit given to my employer by Company Members.

It's just standard rules and regs really. Every other forum I use has this sort of thing and it seems to work well. It means that folk who sell stuff spend a bit of time answering questions as a way of promoting themselves rather than just plugging their products! I'd also suggest a policy of asking folk who have a link to their web site in their signature to link back to the forum from their web site. It will help spread the word and hopefully bring us an even more active membership - it seems to be building nicely at the moment.

Sigh...
If I stated the company I'd be in breach of the rules, I edited out the company name so that I'm not breaching the rules by publishing them.
Company Members are just about every ISP of consequence on the planet which is why this forum must not be abused.
