I am currently making a chair seat using 4 slabs of 15mm poplar glued together. I am trying to imitate the shape of a tractor seat, surely the most butt-friendly surface to sit on provided the weather is not cold and your trousers not too thin. I have already made a stool using this method and have now embarked on a chair.

Just been given some laburnum. Enough for legs arms and sticks for a welsh stick chair but I need a matching wood for the seat. It's yellowish going to dark brown and I can only think of oak. Any other ideas?

Yew also has brown heartwood and lighter sapwood. However, using something similar but not quite the same might produce a jarring effect. Why not look for something to contrast with it, like beech or cherry?

At last I've got a nice piece of cat's paw oak 2 plus inches thick. I reckon it will go well with laburnum, now to get on with it

The oak is a bit too light so I've added some dark oak wood dye to the oil. Still looks a bit too light
