Cranborne Chase Woodfair - A Woodland Celebration

Postby nickyjsm » Tue Jun 26, 2007 2:40 pm

The biggest woodfair in the south is coming to Dorset this autumn and organisers are keen to involve all the woodfolk from Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire.

The Cranborne Chase Woodfair, run by the Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs AONB, aims to attract more than 7,000 people to its event at the Larmer Tree, Tollard Royal on Saturday 10th October and Sunday 11th October 2009. It's urging anyone who works with wood - from foresters to furniture makers, willow weavers to wood-turners to get involved to help promote the environmental, social and economic value of the region's trees and woods.

A variety of exhibitors and demonstrators from the wonderful world of wood will be displaying their products and skills. Visitors will be able to see why shire horses are still one of the most effective means of logging; they can learn why wood is an efficient and renewable source of fuel and admire the traditional skills of a wide range of craftsmen and artists.

The Cranborne Chase Woodfair will also be a celebration of some of the regions most famous and traditional industries, such as cider and willow together with lots of other locally sourced and produced food and drink. Artisans and crafts folk who work with wood are especially welcomed.

"We've got everything from big forestry machines to medieval farriers; falconry to furniture makers, timber frames to wood turning. Whether it's the old world of wood you hanker after or the potential of biofuels as a means of tackling climate change, we can show you why wood is as relevant today as it's always been, this is a family event with lots of children's activities from environmental theatre productions to clay and chalk workshops" says organiser, Nicky Matthews.

Cranborne Chase Wood Fair

Postby Graham Elliott » Tue Oct 23, 2007 7:56 am

I attended this event last weekend, purely as a member of the public, and enjoyed the experience. There was a lot to see and do with demonstrations, practical help and advice. It seemed to be well attended and I trust this will become a regular event which I believe could become one of the largest in the country in a few years. One of the biggest things in its' favour, it wasn't over-priced £6 pound to get in and I found a bacon roll for £2.50 lots of bacon, very good value.

Looking forward to next time

The event was a huge success with over 6,000 people attending a glorious weekend with exhibitors doing a good trade and the public going home with a secure message about woodlands, their management and uses. Thanks to everyone who came and to all interested who would like to attend next time we urge you to get in touch :P
