Furness Charcoal making teaser
weekend 30 September 1st and second of October 2016
This autumn there will be a weekend of charcoal making in the lakes, near to backbarrow. From Friday 30 sept till Sunday 2nd of October. This will be in a 100 acre of a traditional woodland , historically important for charcoal production for the local iron foundry and gun powder mill
The event will be a taster of a larger event next year (2017).This year we will be carrying out two methods of charcoal making . A Traditional method (on a very reduced size) and a retort method (using a James Hookway retort).
The event is open to anyone interested in charcoal making . For the whole weekend or just a hour .
the wood is easily access from roads leading from the A590 near to low edge , heading towards Cartmel the wood is past the entrances to Bigland hall ,past mungeon farm ,the belted Galloway farm(on the left) , as the wood starts on the right ,there is a gate on the right, this is the entrance into the wood ,there will be cars parked in the wood . follow the path through the wood and up the slope, we will be at the top of the slope..
There is plenty of camping space , friendly dogs welcome.
