I have found that our steam generator at college (looks like the usual wallpaper stripper) fits a 1/4" british standard pipe thread nicely. This means there's a wealth of standard brass plumbing fittings. I got a 1/4" nipple from a diy store for 80p and it threads itself happily into a 12mm drilled hole. running nipples are available online and will give you more length.

Saddlers clams: I use oak barrel staves. They have the curve already in them!
