For the Chiltern Group, 2010 was full of interest with a mix of woodland meetings, & local shows. With considerable expertise within the group our focus has been to hold informal workshops when members have passed on their skills to others. These sessions have included spooncarving with Stuart King, stickmaking with Roger Figg and I have covered steambending at my home workshop.

Looking ahead to 2011, we have set the main dates for our meetings, there will also be some extra sessions covering tool sharpening and another steambending day at my home workshop, see details in the local newsletter which will be sent out to regulars or contact me for a copy.

April 9th& 10th – Longdown Wood, nothing specific organised yet but, it will be a good opportunity to start a project - perhaps an entry for the “Bodgers Ball” craft competition coming up on the second weekend in May?

Our member Ted Tuddenham who owns Longdown Wood where we meet is celebrating his retirement over the weekend of August 6th & 7th with a Summer Bodging Party. He invites our regular group members to join him and his family for the occasion. More details nearer the time.

The National Trust & Chilterns Conservation Group have invited us to demonstrate at their Countryside Festival at Ashridge near Berkhamstead on Sunday 18th September. This event is the most popular show of its kind in the area and is well worth attending.

October 8th& 9th – Longdown Wood autumn meeting, our most popular group event. Food will be provided for the whole weekend and we will plan to put on another training workshop as we have done for the past few years. Any ideas for the theme for this are welcomed, please get in touch.

That’s all I have to report for the moment, will do a local newsletter in March to report progress on plans. We welcome new members and you will find us a friendly and supportive group, please get in touch if you have any questions and let me know if you are coming to the meetings.
hillockcottage@btinternet.com or 01494 758633

For the Chiltern Group, 2009 was full of interest with a mix of woodland meetings, local shows and a successful hurdle making workshop weekend to round off the season in October. Ted Tuddenham has written about this in a Gazette article.
Looking ahead to 2010, we have set some dates for our meetings, these are as follows –
April 10th & 11th – Longdown Wood, nothing specific organised yet but, it will be a good opportunity to start a project - perhaps an entry for the “Bodgers Ball” craft competition coming up on the second weekend in May?
Our local area show is at Great Missenden on the 17th & 18th July. For putting on a good demonstration at this event we get a fee which helps us to fund training workshops for the group. The more members that can be there the better so make a date!
The National Trust & Chilterns Conservation Group have invited us to demonstrate at their Countryside Festival at Ashridge near Berkhamstead on Sunday 26th September.
Saturday & Sunday 15 / 16th July – The Chiltern Show, Great Missenden

The APT Chiltern Group are getting together at the annual Chiltern Show at Great Missenden. Camping on site and setting up from Friday afternoon. We will aim to repeat the demonstration we tried out at Wendover Woods in April, has anyone else got a burning ambition to do a demo of their own ? – give it some thought and let me know - the more the better.

The Chiltern Show is on the A413 - alongside the Great Missenden by-pass, the event will be well signposted.

Saturday & Sunday 7 / 8th October – Longdown Wood near Princes Risborough.

To round off the year there’s a weekend at Ted Tuddenham’s wood at Cadsden, Ted very generously supplies the greenwood. This will be our fourth autumn meeting here - with our new tent available we will be able to shelter better from the elements, ( memories of the cold winds that we have braved in previous years )! If you are camping over the weekend please note that there are no toilets or water on site so come prepared. Alternatively, come along on the individual days.

Longdown Wood at Cadsden is approx 1 mile east of the “Taj Mahal” roundabout on the A 4010 between Kimble and Princes Risborough. The entrance to the wood is on the south side of the road just up the hill from the Plough Inn, space for parking in the wood is limited so please only drive in if you have equipment to unload, there is also parking in a lay-by near to the entrance.

Please contact Richard Charles if you are coming to any of these events or for more information.

charles@hillockcottage.fsnet.co.uk
01494 758633

The new season has started well with a splendid day at Wendover Woods on April 9th and a weekend at Ted Tuddenham's wood at Cadsden on April 22/23rd.

At Wendover we were able to try out our marquee for the first time and managed to give a comprehensive display of how a Chiltern chair is made. This included demos of cleaving, shaving, turning, bottoming, steam bending, and assembly; Ted gave a running commentary and we attracted quite a crowd ( at least until the hail storm came along! ).

Robin Fawcett also gave a workshop/demo on turning a honey drizzler and Stuart King brought his cast iron treadle lathe which was put to good use making wooden flowers which were popular with the punters. Roger Figg the stick maker showed the process of straightening and bending the tops of walking sticks.

Many thanks to all who helped make this an enjoyable and worthwhile day.
