West Midlands Bodgers have met up twice this year. Both were at Acton Scott Working Farm Museum, in Shropshire. Two more meetings are planned at this location on Aug. 27 & Oct.22. All APT members are welcome
Ian W, who works at Acton Scott, is the facilitator, and has an excellent setup of 4 pole lathes and shaving horses under cover. And, most importantly, a wood fire to brew the tea!
Most people bring packed lunch, but a café is available on site.
Because we are lucky enough to have a full working setup at hand, the meetings tend to be a social affair, with exchanging of work methods and general joviality, spiced up with individual projects and showing off to museum visitors. And tea brakes...
The April meeting was attended by a few newcomers to our group. (Although not new to greenwoodworking)
April participants: Matthew, Desmond, Peter L, Lee S, Tony and Ian
Matthew traveled all the way from Warwickshire, and consequently found it easier to form his own local group there….Like ur style Matt!!
The meeting was a social affair with plenty of "networking" and demonstrating to museum visitors
The June meeting was attended by Phil, Desmond, David, Tony, Ian, Kim and Jannicke
Ian demonstrated how he adzed a chair seat, that was held in a vertical position on a workbench.
Some of us had a go, using Ian´s technique, which included a softwood block stopping the movement of the adze into exposed body parts…
Undersigned demonstrated how to mark out and turn/carve barley twists on the lathe.
(I have to admit that I used “new” tools: a stainless steel rasp – shame on me!)
In order to create resistance while shaping the twists, the cord was wrapped around the “wrong” way.
A discussion followed about different approaches to making barley twists, with some preferring to use a saw, cutting the groove to depth first.
