This Competition will be held at Carpenters' Hall, Throgmorton Avenue, London, EC2N 2JJ on Tuesday 16th October 2012
RULES AND CONDITIONS
1. This competition is open to any member of the Pole Lathe Association and is for a set piece, namely a Talking 'Stick: The talking stick has been used for centuries by many American Indian tribes as a means of just and impartial hearing. The talking stick was commonly used in council circles to designate who had the right to speak. When matters of great concern came before the council, the leading elder would hold the talking stick and begin the discussion. When he finished what he had to say he would hold out the talking stick, and whoever wished to speak after him would take it. In this manner the stick was passed from one individual to another until all who wished to speak had done so. It has been used currently in groups in this country to facilitate discussion. 2. The Talking Stick must be turned on a pole lathe, from green wood sourced from the British Isles. 3. There are no restrictions as to size, shape or style, and one or more pieces may be used. 4. The finish is to be a tooled finish, no sandpaper to be used and an applied finish is optional. 5. All work must have been executed by the competitor. 6. There is no restriction on the number of entries by each competitor and winners of previous competitions may enter, but the work must not have been entered for any other competition of the Company. 7. The judges will consider the appeal of the design, technical excellence, originality and quality of finish. 8. The Judges' decision shall be final and binding on all competitors. 9. A First Prize of £300 and a voucher for £100 from Crown Handtools Ltd will be awarded. There will be a Second Prize of £200 and a voucher for £75 from Crown Handtools Ltd, and the third prize will be £100 and a £50 voucher from Crown Handtools. 10. No prize shall be awarded if the best entries are considered by the judges to be of insufficiently high standard. 11. Entry forms may be obtained from the Secretary of your organisation or, for independent turners, from the Clerk of the Company or from the Company website. Completed forms must be returned to the Clerk by 16th September 2012. 12. Each entry should have an attached non-adhesive label, clearly stating the name of the competitor, the competition being entered and dated. Any identifying mark must be covered. 13. The entry must be delivered to the Reception Steward at Carpenter's Hall between 9.30 am and 11.30am on the morning of the Competition.
