How long do you leave you wood after felling before turning?

Postby BoatieRichard » Wed May 30, 2018 7:44 pm

Hello all,

Build my lathe during a course at the weekend and turned two 'bowls'.

Now eager to get better at it by practising loads, but was advised that I needed to wait at least six months from felling a tree before I use the wood. I am itching to get started so was wondering how long do you all would leave your wood after felling before turning?

Cheers all,

Richard

Hi, when I first started turning bowls many years ago I did it all by the book, leaving the wood to mellow for various amounts of time. But during one stormy Winter I suddenly had a glut of wood and a desire to get turning so I turned about 6 different wood green and they all turned beautifully. Yes as I expected there was a bit of distortion of the rims but in some woods there was virtually no difference whether I turned it green or mellowed. I find most people like the slight wavy rim on some bowls. My advice to you is get turning and if you can leave some to mellow and turn at different stages do it, learn what works for you and build up your own bank of knowledge. I did a post on this a while back, I'll try and find it for you and let you know.

Hi BoatieRichard, you'll find a couple of post on "Show us your bowls" page 4 which might help you.
