Whitby Spar Hook

Postby sparkes » Wed Oct 19, 2016 1:19 pm

I have a nice clean Whitby Spar Hook that I picked up at a car boot a few years ago. Has anyone come across one of these beore or have any information on there use etc. I have looked on line but can not find one for sale anywhere. If anyone could use it for its intended purpose I would be happy to trade it for any Timber framing tool but really just want to know what its purpose is. Thanks. New on here by the way.

Spar hooks are for splitting thatching spars (and presumably sways and liggers, too): http://www.thatchadvicecentre.co.uk/art ... atch-spars

The Whitby knife is in fact a folding Italian pruning hook, of the roncola type...

It is not a spar hook,,,

It is (was) made in Italy, in Maniago, for Whitby - they also imported a matching folding saw...

see: http://www.whitbyandco.co.uk/whitby-and-co/the-history

These have become very collectable - and thus very expensive - there is one on eBay at the moment for £150..
