Wanted: fruitwood mallets for Glos cathedral masons

Postby gloucestermason » Mon Feb 04, 2013 8:43 am

Hi everyone,

I'm a stonemason at Gloucester Cathedral, and we're looking for anyone who can help source/make some traditional wooden mallets for us, specifically small carving mallets. These are best made from seasoned fruit wood, especially apple and pear, are circular in plan and have the grain of the wood running across the plan (not vertically). We will need probably only 2 or 3, but there may be an opportunity for more if masons at other cathedrals are interested! We would of course pay a reasonable price for the materials and crafting.

Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Alex

Hi Alex,

I'm just down the road in Stroud. I've some crab apple branches seasoning out, so might be able to help. I'll PM you about it.

Presumably these mallets would have separate heads and handles, with the grain orientated the way you ask.

Brian.

Hi Brian,

Thanks, that sounds very promising! The mallets would have separate heads and handles; the grain orientation of the handles doesn't matter too much. You can reach me at alexrosedeacon (at) hotmail.com

Best wishes,

Alex

Hi Brian,

Just wondering if you're still interested in helping out with the mallets?

Best wishes,

Alex
