Nice Looking Forum Phill.
Hi There. I'm fairly new to green woodworking and i'm coming across a problem I cant quite figure out and I'd really welcome any feedback. Basically I've set up my compound angles correctly with someone sighting for me, drilled the mortices using an auger bit, cut the tenon to the same size, however even though the tenon is a nice tight fit I have this sloping gap at the top. Even when I use a wedge its not enough to close the gap. Am I missing something obvious?
Many thanks
Ali
Hi Ali...Is that the auger entry or exit hole? Possibly you've allowed a little wobble whilst getting your compound angles set up and this has let the aucer start in a different plane before being corrected The cutting edges would have made the "extra" cut if you'd come in at too oblique an angle before coming up. Do you use bevel gauges? you need at least 2 (One for each plane) and check the auger is at the right angles before the cutting edge makes contact with the surface of your piece. Hope that helps...Dave
Hi Dave. Thanks for your reply, what you are suggesting makes sense. This is the auger entry hole. I used two bevel gauges, but I do find it a struggle to hold the power drill tight and at the right angle all the way through.
I used to use a brace and bit but I had a shoulder op so I had to find another option. Do you have any other suggestions to make this a bit easier?. Thanks Ali
Hi Ali, the only other thing I can suggest is to auger from the other side and clamp a sacrificial piece of wood to where the exit will be to prevent break out. It means working your angles out in reverse but by the time you get to the upper surface, your diameter and angle should be right and tight!
@demundz Now there's a good thought !! I'll give that a go. Many thanks for your help Dave.
@ali.hunt2706 You're very welcome! Good luck!
