The Gazette is distributed to over 1000 members, both in the UK and further afield. Starting life as an A4 sheet folded in half, and produced on a typewriter, it is now an A5 format, perfect bound booklet including colour photographs and running to up to 60 pages. Many Editors have taken a turn over its 20 year life. It is now produced quarterly, and among other things includes:

  • Articles, how-to pieces, book reviews, event reports (including a special report on the gazettesannual Bodgers Ball) and notes on interesting awards;
  • Local group news with photographs. Reports include dates and locations for future meetings, a valuable guide for anyone hoping to get in touch with other bodgers and have a go themselves, however experienced;
  • Committee reports, including finances (once a year), minutes from the quarterly meetings and AGM;
  • List of courses run by members.

The Gazette is printed and distributed in as environmentally-friendly a manner as we can. Paper and cover material are FSC certified; printing uses vegetable inks and ink recovery processes.

Some recent Gazette articles are available to read here.

If you would like to contribute to the Gazette, by sending an article or Local Group report then please email the This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . Submissions are always welcome, whether articles (up to 1,500 words, with images, which will make a feature of up to 6 pages), short pieces (up to 500 words perhaps with a picture or two), correspondence or group reports. You can also think about essays, book reviews, how-to guides, event reports or anything else. See the latest issue of the Gazette for deadlines, which are strict.

Pictures are very welcome too. In order to print, pictures need to be high resolution. We also need clear captions for all images, including credits if required. Drawings (or wood engravings and other illustrations) also work very well in a publication like ours. If your images include minors or vulnerable members of the community, it is essential that you seek, and notify us of, permission for them to appear in the Gazette.

To submit large images, you can use a large file transfer service. For example wetransfer, which is web-based, free and requires no registration.

Submissions, in summary, should have the following:

  • Title & author
  • Article text (unformatted text is fine)
  • Dates (eg events, Local group meetings), links etc
  • Contact details (for you or your group)
  • Images, high resolution ideally with a caption for each and photo credits if not you. Parental permission for minors/ vulnerable people.

You can place an ad in the Gazette if it relates to green woodwork or closely related matters. We do not encourage advertorial, although you are free to make ordinary submissions (articles, event reports, etc.) and include brief details of your commercial activities at the end of the article to direct readers to you. Remember that if you are submitting ads (particularly for events) you should check the estimated delivery times to ensure that there is enough time.

Ads can be 1/4, 1/2 or full page.  Please ensure that you submit graphics of sufficient resolution for printing. We have rates for members and non-members as follows:

APTGW members: 1/4 page - £20, 1/2 page - £30, full page - £50

Non-members: 1/4 page - £40, 1/2 page - £60, full page - £100

With a few copies still available, ‘Tales from the Wood’ is a collection of how-to articles and features from the first ten years of the Gazette’s life. This is a very handy resource for anyone interested in the various designs, experiments and explanations printed over a very active first decade.
